According to Scientific American, the average American consumes 2 pounds of insects per year. The amount worldwide is much greater because our FDA works as a safety net by having food defect standards that do not allow a large amount per serving. Have you ever noticed small moths flying around the house especially in the kitchen or around where food is stored? Most likely they did not invade your home but entered in a Trojan Horse like oatmeal, cereals or and grain based edible stored product. Moths are in the product as eggs and then complete the life cycle emerging in your house. Other examples include: a 16-ounce jar of peanut butter can have up to 136 insect parts and 4 rodent hair fragments, a 16 oz box of spaghetti can have 450 insect parts and 9 rodent hair fragments, Pizza sauce can have up to 30 fruit fly eggs per 100 grams, and after a year of drinking coffee, one will have infested 136,000 insect fragments (Tarro). Don't worry, what does not kill you will make you stronger. Be thankful you don't live somewhere in the world where foods are not regulated as well.
